The Great Migration: When & Where to See It in the Maasai Mara

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most breathtaking events in the natural world. Each year more than 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, move in a vast circular route between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grazing.

When to visit

In Kenya, the herds typically arrive in the Maasai Mara between July and October. The dramatic Mara River crossings — where crocodiles lie in wait — are most likely from late July through September, though nature keeps its own schedule.

How to plan

Book early, stay at least three nights in the Mara to maximise your chances, and consider a dawn balloon safari for an unforgettable aerial view. Our guides track herd movements daily to position you in the right place at the right time.
